Digital Competency Framework
BBC
Intro
Set in a surreal future, where everyone owns a personal life assistant in the form of an AI robot friend. Each film covers a different topic, but they all follow one story-arc, becoming one feature length film. The project was commissioned by BBC Wales, with the aim of teaching pupils about Digital Competence Framework (DCF).
Filming 11 Episodes
We filmed all 11 episodes in the space of 2 weeks, with half a dozen actors and a small film crew. Each episode had to be filmed again in Welsh. This required the actors to also speak fluent Welsh. The set is left open and bare for the camera to see, as a stylistic choice for aiding the story. We wanted it to feel like theatre, with the robot being part of the cast. In total, there is over 100 minutes of content, with the longest episode being over 6 minutes long. The robot was animated individually for very single scene. The longest episode included over 100 shots, which required compositing of the robot, alongside visual effects and motion graphics. The process was done in-house at Revenant.
It's all in the detail
We believe it’s the finer details that push our work into that next level. This is paramount for building the world around the ideas and making the overall experience much more rich and immersive. When we designed and created our robot, we wanted them to feel manufactured. ‘The No67’ has a comical twist to the evolution of our product, while having retro influences to films such as ‘The Last Starfighter’. With today’s technology aiming to be more convenient and streamlined, we went the opposite with our design. Our intentions were to be more theatrical than realistic. We felt that if the robot was clunky in just the right way, it would help the viewer engage with its humility and restrictions to the physical world; the friendlier it was, the easier it would be to sell to an audience.
