Crafting a visually captivating poster for Oakley was a rewarding challenge for our team at Revenant. We embarked on this project with the goal of encapsulating the essence of Oakley’s Teaser 1 world within a single image. Craig Simmers, one of our senior 3D artists, played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. Below, Craig walks us through the creative process, from the initial design phase to the final composite.
Creating the Oakley poster was a collaborative process that began with an initial design and layout created by Luke, our head of Animation. He provided the foundation of the piece, which included the camera, character pose, and environment block-out, all of which set the direction for the composition of the poster. With these elements, I started creating an environment that resonated with the Oakley Teaser 1 world. One of the key visual elements from the Teaser 1 environment is the large rock spires that span across the landscape. Including these in the poster environment helped visually link the poster to the established Oakley world.
In addition to the environment, we decided to include an early concept sculpt of Maxine’s car. Despite it not making it into the final teaser, we felt it had a lot of visual potential. We had to consider taking this concept sculpt and processing it in a way that would allow us to texture and shade the asset, highlighting the car’s design features.
After completing the final 3D render, the next step was to composite the image. This involved a sky replacement to better match the stormy sky from Teaser 1 and extending the environment by adding additional spires and hills in the background. These steps added more depth and created a cinematic look for the final poster.
